Reevaluating The Publishing Experience

Thoughts About the tBook

As the tBook Project nears completion, I find myself reevaluating the reading and publishing experience — perhaps even the purpose of writing itself. Each step closer to launching the site reminds me how deeply entrenched I’ve been in marketing and selling: fighting the urge to follow traditional practices like creating buzz, hyping releases, and pushing content to social media.

I am not selling books. I am giving my readers books that increase in value.

Maybe I’m beginning to rediscover writing’s true purpose — the act of sharing thoughts, now revealed without the shadow of dollars hanging over it. Is “getting read” the ultimate goal of literature? After all, no sharing can occur without reading. If that’s true, then there’s a certain horror in realizing how society reduces even priceless ideas to dollar signs. A Van Gogh isn’t valued for its beauty or perspective — it’s valued for the price someone is willing to pay. A first edition of Leaves of Grass sits encased in glass, protected as an asset, never read.

I can’t help but wonder: did I surrender to commodification by creating the tBook? I like to believe we’re disrupting the publishing market from within — making the field fair for all players. Still, I wrestle with uncertainty. But I’m driven forward by one truth: authors having more control over their work is infinitely better than leaving it in the hands of a few affluent individuals and corporations.
